Introduction to construction

The aim of this course is to give you a through introduction to a variety of topics essential to working in construction. You will develop an understanding of the construction sector considering Health and Safety legislation and welfare, construction technology and working as part of a group as well as exploring other vocationally-relevant topics and areas.

Who is this course for?

The Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to Construction course is ideal for anyone aged 16+ and currently in receipt of benefits who is interested in working in a site-based construction role, for example; site logistics operatives, maintenance operatives, groundworkers and highways maintenance workers.

What are the benefits of this course?

The content and structure is designed to be flexible for learners to achieve a variety of employment-based skills, along with several work-related tasters that could be selected from the following areas:

Topics covered

These include: completing a job application form, job searching, effective teamwork, preparing for an interview, health and safety in the workplace, working as a volunteer, building working relationships with customers, preparing for work placement, the rules to deliver customer service. Learners will work towards and achieve the following units:

Learners will receive support and feedback from qualified professionals, who will holistically assess evidence produced via group and individual activities to ensure learners can demonstrate a good level of understanding against all aspects of the qualification.

Learners will receive quality feedback to enable them to achieve their full potential.

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16+ and who are currently in receipt of benefits. The objective of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment.

Functional skills Math & English - Entry level 1,2 and 3 and Level 1 and 2.

English and Maths functional skills City and Guilds syllabus. Learners will be able to work at a level that suits their ability and will be entered into exams as and when they are ready. Exam entry is not compulsory. Lots of our learners progress from our courses to more formal learning opportunities such as college courses, and apprenticeship opportunities. Some of our learners also progress into employment and sometimes access our courses alongside employment opportunities.

Access to YES groups is flexible with no fixed start date or end date. Our sessions are informal and learners are able to work at a level that suits them when they feel ready to engage with what's on offer.

Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills

Across 12 weeks, Young people will gain a level 1 qualification whilst also building their confidence, employability skills and more. Young people will gain two weeks work experience, manage a community project, fundraise for a local charity and much more.

Women in Digital Free Training Courses

To encourage and inspire women and girls to explore career possibilities in creative/digital industries, Boomsatsuma has developed taster sessions and introductory courses in Games Design, Visual Communication and VFX, Creative and Digital Media, and VR and AR.

These courses are FREE and aimed at:

  • 16 - 19 year olds who are not currently in employment, education or training

  • Anyone that identifies as female, that is currently living in Bristol, and is interested in learning new digital skills
